Affordable all-electric: the 5 lowest-priced new electric cars in the United States

2021-12-15 00:14:19 By : Ms. Amanda Wu

The drop in battery costs will soon help make electric vehicles cheaper than combustion models-not only in terms of total cost of ownership, but also in terms of upfront pricing.

However, if you are only looking for the lowest-priced new electric car on the market without making mileage your top priority, then the options are very limited.

Most newly launched electric vehicles are larger and more expensive. Many compliant cars that were mandated by California and ZEV to comply with its rules, such as the Fiat 500e, Ford Focus Electric, Chevrolet Spark EV, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and Volkswagen e-Golf, have long since ceased to exist. After the 2021 model year, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, valued at $34,250, ceased production, and another model has just withdrawn.

What is left of the most affordable electric car? Here are the five cheapest new electric cars for 2022, which are either already on the market or will arrive soon, based solely on the list price. Four of the five are eligible for the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, but remember that you need to bear tax liabilities in excess of that amount to recover the full amount.

All five are cars or crossovers that are very car-like. Although we do like electric trucks, we can use some cheaper electric car options.

Nissan Leaf Price (including destination): $28,375 EPA mileage: 149 miles Standard technology: DC fast charging, 240V charging cable

Nissan has reduced the price of the 2022 Leaf, making it the lowest-priced electric car on the market this year. The Leaf includes a 40-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a range of 149 miles. Although Leaf Plus is upgraded to a 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the maximum 226-mile range starts at $33,375. All Leafs use a single-motor setup with front-wheel drive and are now equipped with DC fast charging, which was previously omitted on the basic model.

Mini Cooper SE Price (including destination): $30,750 EPA range: 114 miles Standard technology: heated steering wheel, satellite radio

When we drove the Cooper SE for the first time last year, we found this front-wheel drive hatchback to be fun to drive, with kart-like speed, suitable for city driving, although it is not very useful or practical. The range of the 32.6 kWh battery pack is not enough to consider the Cooper SE as the only car, but with its quirky brand, this two-door hatchback may be a good choice for families with larger SUVs or cars . .

Chevrolet Bolt EV price (including destination): $31,995 EPA mileage: 259 miles Standard technology: mobile 240V charging cable

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV is not only improved overall, but also has an updated interface and better seats and materials; GM this year reduced the price of the Bolt EV by about $5,000 while maintaining its 65 kWh battery pack. The mileage. However, the Bolt EV now has a big asterisk: At the time of writing, it has not yet been released because General Motors has worked with battery supplier LG to carry out recall repairs to compensate for the vehicle’s tendency to catch fire. Please also remember that General Motors is one of only two companies to reach the 200,000 vehicle elimination cap, and Bolt EV is the only company on this list that is not eligible for the federal electric vehicle tax credit.

Mazda MX-30 Price (including destination): $34,645 EPA mileage: 100 miles Notable features: gasoline models for weekend trips, loan plans available

For decades, Mazda's products have been surprisingly different in design and engineering, and the 2022 MX-30 EV is no exception. The company equipped the first electric car launched in the United States with a small 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a range of only 100 miles—and it initially only drove to California. But it shows that it understands that front-wheel drive electric vehicles are the best choice for commuters. With it, there is an MX-30 Elite Access Loaner Program, and car owners can use other Mazda models 10 days a year for three years. If this is not weird enough for you, an extended rotation range version is also on the way.

Hyundai Kona Electric Price (including destination): $35,185 EPA mileage: 258 miles Standard technology: wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

With the arrival of the highly anticipated Ioniq 5 SUV, Hyundai may have removed Ioniq Electric from the 2022 lineup, but perhaps to make up for this, it has also lowered the price of Hyundai Kona Electric in 2022. Hyundai said that a 64 kWh battery pack can be charged from 10% to 80% in 47 minutes. Hyundai's infotainment interface is the best in its class, with a fast and simple menu system and standard wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
