The new Toyota Corolla Cross small SUV will be equipped with a new hybrid system when it finally reaches the Australian coast.
Toyota released the European version this week and has previously shown crossover versions that will be sold in Japan, Thailand and the United States.
Although they share the same body, there are subtle style differences. For example, the European Corolla Cross follows the styling cues of American models, with a larger grille and a more refined front apron.
The Corolla Cross will go on sale in Australia in the second half of next year, more than two years after the release of the model.
The Corolla Cross in the Australian market received a new 2.0-liter hybrid power unit that made its debut in a small SUV. This will specifically provide all-wheel drive, which includes a second motor that produces 30kW on the rear axle.
It is also equipped with a lithium-ion battery, marking that Corolla hybrid small cars no longer use nickel-metal hydride batteries. Toyota said that the battery is more powerful than before and the weight has been reduced by 40%.
The total system output of the AWD Corolla Cross Hybrid is expected to be 146kW, making it one of the most powerful petrol or hybrid small SUVs on the market. It matches the power output of the modern warm-up turbocharged Kona N-Line and is more powerful than the Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport.
This helped push Toyota from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.
Front-wheel drive models will provide gasoline and hybrid models. Although Toyota Australia has not confirmed this, FWD hybrids are likely to use the aging 1.8-liter naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle engine that Toyota found in the current generation of Corolla hatchbacks and sedans.
The Corolla Cross small SUV will join Toyota's growing SUV lineup below the RAV4 and above the Yaris Cross, keeping pace with the C-HR.
The GA-C version based on Toyota's TNGA architecture is 4460 mm long, 1825 mm wide, 1620 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2640 mm. It stands out among Toyota's main SUVs. It is slightly longer than Nissan’s upcoming new generation Qashqai, but the Corolla Cross is narrower, lower than Nissan, and has a shorter wheelbase.
Other competitors include Honda's upcoming new generation HR-V, Kona, Subaru XV, Mazda CX-30, Kia Selfos, Volkswagen T-Roc and Skoda Kamiq. When the new models are launched next year, both Qashqai and HR-V will be equipped with hybrid systems.
The only other specification that Toyota Australia provides at this stage is that it is equipped with the latest multimedia systems, including wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.
The full specifications and prices will be announced before launch in the second half of next year.
