TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Renesas Electronics Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange stock code: 6723), a major supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today launched its new Automotive High Definition Link (AHL) Technology that enables automakers to pass low-cost cables and connectors that currently support standard-definition video. The object recognition function of high-definition video in automobile safety system is becoming more and more important. Renesas is a leader in the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) market. AHL can be used with other Renesas products, such as R-Car automotive SoC, RH850 MCU, automotive PMIC and analog components, to cost-effectively achieve many safety All vehicle functions.

The new RAA279971 AHL encoder and RAA279972 decoder use modulated analog signals to transmit video at a transmission rate that is 10 times lower than the transmission rate required to transmit high-definition signals digitally. The lower transmission rate means that traditional twisted-pair cables and standard connectors can be used, just like existing analog video cables and connectors. On the other hand, digital links such as SerDes require highly shielded cables and high-end connectors, which cost much higher than AHL, may need to be replaced after 5-7 years, and are difficult to wire due to bending radius limitations.

AHL has strong anti-noise ability, and has a two-way control channel independent of video data operation, and can initialize, program and monitor camera modules. A key feature of AHL performance and cost reduction is the ability to simultaneously control cameras through the same pair of lines (UTP) during video transmission. Compared with digital links, another security advantage of AHL is its performance. In rear-view camera applications, the digital link will be degraded due to the failure of the cable harness or connector assembly, because the weak signal will cause the macro block to appear, thereby hiding most of the visible area. Using the same cable to compare under the same conditions, the AHL link will show slight changes in video color or contrast, but all pixels will appear on the screen, and the image will accurately identify objects or people behind the vehicle.

Niall Lyne, Vice President of Renesas Electronics’ Automotive Analog Power and Video Business Unit, said: “Advanced safety systems are no longer just for luxury cars.” The AHL system now enables our automotive customers to be in all new cars, including economical models. Provide these functions. "

The new RAA279971 AHL encoder and RAA279972 decoder are available now. Renesas Electronics also provides RTKA279971DA2000BU AHL encoder and RTKA279972DA1000BU AHL decoder evaluation boards. For more information about AHL, please visit www.renesas.com/AHL.
