The S90 is Volvo's top luxury car. It comes in many forms, including a 400-horsepower plug-in hybrid. The 2022 version tested has a basic B6 two-liter mild hybrid power unit, which replaces the T6 and produces 296 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The motor uses turbocharging and supercharging, and is connected to a 48-volt electrical system.

The good news is that you don't really need 400 horsepower. This power system travels 31 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon in cities (26 mpg on average). If fuel costs are high, choose a plug-in hybrid: using the electric range provides an equivalent mileage of 63 miles per gallon.

The cars in the lanes also have all-wheel drive, which has little impact on fuel economy. The full name of this model is S90 B6 AWD R-Design, and the tested price is $64,540.

These cars are loaded at the R-Design level, but there are still options available for purchase. These (additional price of about 10,000 US dollars) are useful 750 US dollars climate package (add heated rear seats and steering wheel), 1,900 US dollars premium package (powered tailgate, head-up display, surround view camera, air purifier system), value Bowers and Wilkins sound system worth $3,200, adaptive air suspension worth $1,200, alloy wheels worth $800 and metallic paint worth $895. Some of them are gold-plated for Lily-R-Design allows you to get high-quality sound from Harman Kardon speakers.

Through this form, S90 buyers get an ultra-safe and very comfortable cruiser. Remember, Volvo’s mission is "No one should be seriously injured or killed in the new Volvo." The safety equipment list has 15 entries. The use of safety cages to protect passengers, the addition of airbags and technical systems all add weight-resulting in a car weighing 4,389 pounds.

S90 is a good partner in some bad weather. All-wheel drive and 19-inch alloy wheels are paired with Pirelli Cinturato tires to make it drive on the road. An acceleration of 60 miles per hour is within 5.6 seconds. It is not a road rocket, but it moves briskly when passing by. The cabin is refined, especially with R-Design features, including Nappa leather options. The backrests of the rear seats can be folded down, which is a very useful feature.

Presumably, the S90 now supports Apple CarPlay, which is the default choice for many test cars. However, despite the correct pairing of the phone, the test pilot’s trick failed to activate it. The infotainment system uses a nine-inch touch screen with many sliding motions. It is based on Android, and once its skills are absorbed, it is good on its own. Some functions such as heated seats can also be controlled via the screen.

Many buyers have avoided sports cars and turned to the same fast SUVs, but this form still has many advantages in terms of handling, aerodynamics, and passenger layout. For car buyers, S90 is a reliable choice. If more space is needed, the V90 off-road wagon (or sometimes called the "manor") is worth considering.

The S90 is Volvo's top luxury car. It comes in many forms, including a 400-horsepower plug-in hybrid.
