Five golden rules for using recycled materials
United States-Grand Cherokee L's new composite tunnel reinforcement is 40% lighter than the previous version. To this end, BASF has developed a lightweight design; L&L Products and Stellatis won the Altair Enlighten Award.
Three companies, BASF, L&L Products and Stellattis, were recognized for their lightweight success in the composite tunnel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L in 2021. The vehicle was launched in May and has just won the prestigious Altair Enlighten Award for its achievements in reducing vehicle weight.
When investigating opportunities to reduce quality and improve durability without compromising safety performance, the Transmission Mounting System (TMS) is one of the key areas. The composite tunnel reinforcement (CTR) is located at the bottom of the vehicle and is part of the entire TMS. For example, if a vehicle collides with an oncoming vehicle slightly, the CTR will transfer the energy load from the outer rail to the transmission mounting beam, thereby improving field performance and testing of small offset rigid barriers in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) standard.

The continuous composite system (CCS) pultrusion technology and the use of BASF's polyurethane chemistry are key factors for the success of CTR. CCS combines a fiber-reinforced pultruded composite carrier with highly engineered sealants and adhesives in a two-dimensional profile. This is a continuous process used to create straight or curved composite profiles reinforced with continuous fibers and mats. The system is designed to provide strength, stiffness and stiffness to lightweight structures.
This is also the first time L&L Products has used its CCS technology and BASF's Elastocoat 74850 polyurethane pultrusion system.
