The new Hyundai Santa Cruz has a closed cab at the front and an open bed at the back. The official definition of pickup truck.
But I bet that pickup truck owners in Snohomish County would not say that Santa Cruz is a pickup truck.
Hyundai will not be offended. In fact, Hyundai agrees. They call Santa Cruz a sports adventure car. This is a fictitious name, but so are sports utility vehicles, and SUVs are now as universally accepted as coupes, cars, or vans.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is based on the company's Tucson compact SUV, with four doors and seats for five passengers, but with a longer wheelbase. The bed is short, about 48 inches, but powerful, with a built-in retractable and lockable solid bed cover.
The bed has multiple fastening devices, adjustable splints and hidden storage points, including a lockable under-floor space, equipped with a drain plug, which can be used for freezer work.
Speaking of responsibilities, I want to mention that the bedspread and the equipment inside the bed are not necessarily standard. It depends on the level of trimming. Or they may be part of an optional ($3,270) activity package.
Santa Cruz has four different decoration levels: SE, SEL, SEL Premium and Limited. The first two are decorated with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The gearbox is an eight-speed automatic gearbox, front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive requires an additional $1,500.
SEL Premium and Limited interiors are equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that provides 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The standard 2.5-liter engine with front-wheel drive has fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg on the highway. The number for AWD is 21/27/23 mpg.
2.5 The turbocharger is rated at 19/27/22 mpg.
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, and the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
The basic pricing for the SE model is US$25,215, including a destination fee of US$1,225. It is comfortably equipped with standard features such as 18-inch wheels, LED lights, remote keyless entry, tilt and retractable steering wheel, and an infotainment system with 8-inch display, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, And two USB ports. The standard equipment of the SE interior also includes a complete list of safety and driver assistance functions.
I drove a Santa Cruz Limited model. Its basic price is US$40,945, but it is indeed equipped with a more powerful turbo engine, AWD, SEL, SEL Premium and all the upgrade features of the Activity Package, plus 20-inch wheels, rainproof -Inductive wipers, heated steering wheel, front seat ventilation, smart cruise control, voice recognition, 10.3-inch screen with navigation function, Bose premium audio, I can move on.
The lively turbo engine serves Santa Cruz well. Turbo lag is negligible, and the power burst is ready when called. The extra 1,500 pounds it can handle on a standard engine may make a deal for drivers with towable items.
Santa Cruz not only looks like a mashup of a truck and an SUV, it also behaves alike. In the cab, it is easy to forget that there is an open bed behind. The style is handsome, the atmosphere is quiet, and the handling is like a car. Go out and you will have a convenient bed that can store items that you cannot or will not transport in the beautiful luxurious cabin.
