Best USB-C PD charger in 2021-CNET

Do I need to charge my phone? Wireless Headphones? laptop? These chargers can do all this.

Nowadays, almost all the devices in your bag are equipped with rechargeable batteries-your phone, tablet, wireless headset, and laptop may be your top priority. But even if you carry four or more devices with you, you don’t need to equip each device with a separate wall charger, socket or cable. That's because you can charge almost everything (including newer laptops) through the universal USC-C device charging technology: USB-C power supply or USB-C PD.

Well, this is an exaggeration-but not an exaggeration. The truth is, if you pack the correct type of charging cable (or dongle), and your laptop or device was released in the past few years, you will be in very good shape. Of course, the key is to get one of the latest and greatest USB-C powered chargers. Fortunately, I have been testing some of them for the past few weeks, and I found some top choices for fast charging on the go.

This list goes far beyond simple mobile phone chargers. Some commonalities of the models we are concerned about: Most of them use a new material called gallium nitride (or GaN), which can make the size of high-power adapters much smaller. As a result, these adapters typically provide a power output of 60 watts or higher, putting them in the same range as the 65 watt chargers that come with many notebook computers. (This also blows away the insignificant 5-watt output charger that is still built in by default on iPhone 11 and earlier models, even though the iPhone 11 Pro model is equipped with an 18-watt USB-C model.)

Most of our top picks below include dual charging outputs instead of one, allowing multiple devices to be charged at the same time. They all have foldable AC pins for easy travel. We would also like to point out that we do not provide a car charger option here, but if you buy a USB car charger in the market, please check this out.

If you are looking for the best USB C charger, read on to learn which of the following verified devices are best for you.

All the following products are independently selected and tested by CNET editors. We will update this list regularly.

In my opinion, this small portable charger is the best in the world. It has a USB C port for power supply and a nice old-fashioned USB-A port, so it can charge anything from Samsung Galaxy and other Android smartphones to wireless headsets-or use it as a full-featured laptop Devices-and most products in between, including Nintendo Switch, Kindle and iPad. (PS4 controllers, which are usually very picky about power supplies, don’t seem to work.) This USB Type-C charger is great for travel, thanks to its relatively small size-it weighs only 105 grams-and a folding fork . Oh, did we mention that it currently sells for $30 on Amazon? In a separate meeting, we saw this thing charging the HP Spectre x360 and charging the new MacBook Air as a MacBook charger. It went from depletion to about 65% in one hour and fully charged in more than 90 minutes. When we put the iPhone X on the second port, it can easily charge the phone battery and the laptop battery at the same time. Do yourself a favor: buy two-one to live at home permanently and the other to stay in the suitcase.

If you want ultimate portability, this USB Type-C device offers the same power and fast charging capabilities as the above version in a smaller package: this USB device with a foldable plug can be used as a laptop charger or Charge your bag for any other device. The only disadvantage is that it loses the extra USB-A output port, so it is impossible to use more than one USB C cable to charge multiple devices at the same time. It used to sell for close to US$50, but it is now about US$40. (The white ones are several dollars more expensive.)

If you don't need a traditional USB-A charging port, this Anker PowerPort is a good choice for charging your devices (including larger devices such as MacBook Pro). This USB Type-C device does split its wattage output, so charging two laptops will slow it down significantly. However, when I charge the iPhone and MacBook Air at the same time, this Anker PowerPort can charge them to 90% and 80% respectively after 90 minutes of fast charging. Its biggest disadvantage is: $55, which is the most expensive here.

Let's lower our expectations: this USB wall charger has 45 watts and is not suitable for charging most laptops (although if you plug it in with a cable and leave it overnight, it will charge a laptop). However, if you want an affordable single-port USC-C wall charger for smartphones, tablets and accessories that provide speed and fit easily in your pocket or wallet, then this RAVPower is a Good fast charging option-and the cost of this USB wall charger is only $30. This is only $1 more than Apple's wall charger, which is larger and less than half the power (only 18 watts output).

You will notice that this list contains only two brands: Anker and RAVPower. The reason why we focus on them is because of our early positive experience with these two brands. In addition, we have seen that some of these fast charging products have been enthusiastically mentioned on shopping sites such as The Inventory, and their Amazon user reviews are usually very positive, whether people are talking about Android, Apple, Kindle, really anything Type of equipment.

In our tests (see below), the performance of the Anker and RAVPower models is very close. But the reason the final list is almost entirely biased towards RAVPower is that the company only killed it in the value field. In almost all head-to-head confrontations, the RAVPower charger beat the equivalent Anker model in price. However, if you see the Anker PowerPort model being sold, it is certainly worth a try.

We are not saying that there are no other good brands, but now that we have tested the brands listed above, we can confirm that they are worth the money. If we see viable alternatives at these price points, we will update this story accordingly.

I ran my own anecdotal tests on these models, reducing the battery life of the three products to zero, charging them and checking the battery life indicator every 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The USB devices I use are 2019 MacBook Air, recent HP Spectre x360 Convertible and iPhone X.

In most cases, I run each charger for each product at least twice, and if their percentages are within a reasonable range, I average them together. The asterisk indicates that the dual-port charger uses both the laptop's cable and the iPhone's cable to charge at the same time.

Make sure your device is compatible. If you have a small device that can be plugged in via a cable—smartphone (whether it’s an Apple or Android smart phone), wireless headset, iPad, Nintendo Switch, etc.—almost certainly all these chargers are compatible. Most of them will charge these products faster (and sometimes much faster) than the default charger that comes with the device. For Macs, this is simple: if your Apple laptop has a USB-C port, it will accept a powered charger, while older models with MagSafe power adapters will not. In terms of PCs and Chromebooks, it’s trickier: most-but not all! - New laptops with USB-C ports support power transfer charging (even if they also have traditional proprietary charging ports). Check the manufacturer's supporting documentation for verification.

Obtain the correct charging cable. The RAVPower dual-port model is our first choice because it is indeed a universal charger: it can use the old USB-A connector or the newer USB-C charging cable to power any standard USB or USB-C device. However, if you get one of the other models mentioned above with only USB-C output, you need to make sure to get a compatible cable, such as:

Make sure the connection is firm. In at least one test, I returned to the laptop 30 minutes later and found that it was not charging at all. It turns out that one side of the cable was too shallow by half a millimeter in the laptop port to be fully connected.

Purchase a USB-C compatible device. Slowly, the entire electronics industry is turning to USB-C as the universal standard for data and power. Although Apple's Lightning port is still a huge exception, the affordable Lightning-to-USB-C cable bridges the charging gap. At the same time, Micro USB is expected to become a more endangered species in the next few years. When you buy battery packs, wireless headphones, tablets, and other pluggable peripherals, you can try to choose USB-C devices, data cables, and chargers anytime, anywhere. This is a great way to make your gadget look forward to the future.

Have a few USB-C to USB-A dongles on hand. Yes, the USB-C power supply is very good-except now that almost every airline seat, coffee shop, airport lounge, and hotel room seems to be equipped with those old-fashioned USB-A charging ports. This is why it never hurts to prepare some adapters for your equipment. The Elebase dongle shown above includes an integrated key fob that can be connected to the main cable. Not entirely elegant, but it gets the job done-$9 per pair.
