Genesis GV60 is the first dedicated electric vehicle that Hyundai luxury brand will launch next year. It is preparing to provide a technology first: it will become one of the first electric vehicles equipped with wireless charging of original equipment in the global market.
Genesis confirmed to Green Car Reports on Friday that the hardware claimed by WiTricity will initially only be available (or enabled) in South Korea. The brand will first integrate wireless charging technology on the GV60 as part of a test or pilot program in this market later next year.
Genesis did not mention wireless charging in the GV60 news materials released last week, and cannot confirm whether and when it may provide wireless charging in the United States, but this may be a technological advantage that will be extended to other markets. Hyundai Motor Group stated that the technology can facilitate some vehicles based on the E-GMP dedicated EV platform. The GV60 is shared with Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
According to WiTricity, this is the first new battery electric car equipped with this technology. Several entries from China have adopted simplified technical standards and may arrive at the same time around the beginning of 2022, or defeat GV60 by a narrow margin. But none of these models are as oriented towards the United States and Europe as the GV60.
For many years, wireless charging technology has been provided as an aftermarket transformation, but it has always been a niche product. This induction technology uses a magnetic field through two coils to achieve current transmission, charging the battery pack of an electric vehicle within hours without any physical connection.
Wireless charging has great potential in electric vehicles because it allows drivers to charge anytime and anywhere — such as in shopping malls, and in snow and winter weather — without having to get out of the car and fuss over charging cables and connectors. The parking tool will only ensure that the car is aligned for optimal charging.
BMW has been testing this technology on some 5 Series plug-in hybrid vehicles, but has not fully announced the results of the test.
Genesis has not released the technical information of the GV60, but both Ioniq 5 and EV6 provide a 77.4 kWh battery pack. In some versions, the battery pack should have a range of more than 300 miles, and they are taking all kinds of charging seriously-including It can be used for fast DC fast charging and two-way functions for future smart home functions. Hyundai Motor has said that as the first model in the promotion of its parent company's mass market electric vehicles, Ioniq 5 will dominate the Tesla Model Y in terms of regaining mileage.

In the United States, unifying a single standard for wireless charging up to 11 kilowatts may help promote development. Some integration of this business occurred in 2019, when Qualcomm sold its Halo wireless technology to WiTricity.
Currently, the real obstacle is to persuade enough stakeholders to install charging boards and hardware. This means automakers, business owners, and customers—and possibly even charging networks. If a luxury brand like Genesis comes forward, it may be the beginning of a great career.
